Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a eye disese that occurs in premature babies.
Blood vessels normally grow from the center of retina at 16 weeks of gestation and then branch outward and reach the edges of the retina by 32 weeks of gestation
In babies born prematurely, normal retinal vessel growth may be disrupted and abnormal vessels can develop, which can cause leaking and bleeding in the eye and subsequent retinal detachment.
Regular followup until retina matures is mandatory.
Early detection and timely treatment reduces the risk of preventable childhood blindness.
