What is LASIK?

LASIK, or laser in-situ keratomileusis, is the most common laser eye procedure to correct refractive vision problems. The procedure reshapes the cornea with an excimer laser. LASIK has replaced many of the other refractive eye surgery methods.

What are Refractive Errors?

Refractive errors are vision problems caused by an eyeball or cornea that is imperfectly shaped. The cornea is the clear part at the front of the eye. It bends and focuses light waves. In refractive errors, the light from an object is not focused on the retina of the eye. This causes a blurred image.

Refractive errors are of four types. They are Myopia (near sightedness - Close objects appear sharp, but those in the distance are blurred), Hyperopia (far-sightedness - You can see distant objects clearly, but objects up close are blurred), Astigmatism (Objects are blurred at any distance), Presbyopia (age related vision problem, refractive surgery can’t correct this problem.)

What is the effect of LASIK Surgery on Refractive Errors?

Regardless of which acuity you achieve, you will experience a dramatic improvement in your vision. Studies estimate that 95 percent of those who undergo the procedure achieved a visual acuity of 20/40, while 85 percent returned to 20/20 vision.

Why LASIK Surgery?

LASIK surgery enables:

  • Better vision and freedom from eye glasses or contact lens
  • Faster and long-term results
  • Quick recovery, no need to deal with bandages or after care procedures
  • Cost saving by avoiding the cost on corrective eye wear or contacts with one-time investment
  • Enjoyable life with perfect vision, without eye glasses.
What are types of Laser Refractive Surgery?
  • PRK
  • LASIK
  • Femtosecond Laser assisted LASIK (100% blade-less LASIK)
Am I the right candidate for LASIK eye surgery?
  • You must be preferably over 21 years old and have healthy eyes, free from eye diseases or corneal abnormalities, such as scars or infections.
  • LASIK is often used for people who are short-sighted, long-sighted, or who have astigmatism.
  • Glass power should be stable for at least a year.
  • LASIK surgery is done -1D to -15D of myopia (near sightedness), +1 to +6D Spherical and up to 6D cylindrical powers of hyperopia (Far sightedness).
  • Patients need to discontinue contact lens before corneal thickness and curvature evaluation.
  • Soft lens need to be discontinued for about a week and semisoft lenses for 3 weeks.
  • Pregnant ladies and nursing mother are not permitted for LASIK.
How long does it take for recovery after LASIK surgery?

Most patients return to their normal lifestyle within as little as 24 hours, however, you cannot drive back home after the LASIK surgery. No more worries about excessive aftercare procedures. You don’t have to deal with bandages or stitches during the recovery period.

How should I prepare for LASIK laser eye surgery?

Before your LASIK surgery, you will be advised what you should expect during and after the surgery. During this session, your medical history will be evaluated and your eyes will be tested. Likely tests include measuring corneal thickness, refraction, and pupil dilation.

At any meeting with your surgeon, you should ask further questions you may have. Afterwards, you can book an appointment for the procedure.

What does LASIK surgery involve?

LASIK surgery is done using a computer-controlled excimer cold laser, and a tool called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon cuts a flap using these tools in the center of the cornea to remove a thin layer of tissue. This causes the cornea to flatten. The flap is replaced without stitches and reattaches to the cornea within minutes.

How long does LASIK Surgery results last?

LASIK takes a few months to adjust your vision totally. Once your eyes adjust, the results should be permanent. The only time a patient requires a follow-up laser eye surgery is, when their eyesight changes slightly with age.

Is LASIK surgery expensive?

Compared to the cost of eyeglasses and annual cost of contacts LASIK eye surgery may have a significant upfront cost. But in the long term, it will save you an exorbitant cost each year on corrective eyewear. In addition, it will also save you the hassle of wearing glasses or contacts to drive, read, play a sport or just enjoy life. LASIK is a great option for improving vision.

How is the recovery from Lasik Surgery?

Recovery from LASIK surgery is fast with minimal discomfort. LASIK can take a few weeks to adjust your vision. Mild pain medicine and eye drops can help common after-effects of surgery such as: Dry eyes or discomfort in the first 24 hours after surgery.

Does Lasik surgery need stitches or bandages around the eye?

You do not have to worry about excessive aftercare procedures. There will not be bandages or stitches to deal with, while you recover. LASIK gives back your vision and freedom.

Is LASIK surgery painful?

LASIK surgery is not painful. Its an outpatient procedure which takes a few minutes per eye, and can be performed for both eyes on the same day.

What are the possible complications from LASIK?

Studies show that complications occur in fewer than 1 in 20 procedures and even these are generally minor problems that don’t cause vision loss. Possible complications may include :

  • Overcorrected or under-corrected vision
  • Irregular astigmatism
  • Corneal haze or glare
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Inability to wear contact lenses
  • Loss of the corneal flap and need for a corneal graft
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Blurry vision or vision loss
What are the potential side effects of LASIK laser eye surgery?

Some patients experience discomfort in the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Other side effects, although rare, may include :

  • Glare
  • Seeing halos around images
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Dry eyes

If you’re thinking about correcting your vision permanently, schedule a consultation with Smart Vision Eye Hospitals, and find out whether you’re a candidate for LASIK.
